Beyond Retro
110-112 Cheshire Street, London, E2 6EJ
Number 8 in the full list
One of London’s vintage big guns, Beyond Retro has been selling the capital second-hand fashion for nearly a decade now; starting off with its jumbo converted dairy on Cheshire Street before satellite branches spread across the capital. The model is simple – the brand buys thrift by the truckload, sifts through for the good bits for its London stores, and then sells the rest cheaply to the developing world. While no longer the absolute bargain it used to be, Beyond Retro still offers the thrill of an eccentric new buy for less than you’d pay on the high street, and its hipster packed new branch in Dalston features a huge selection of vintage clothes, as well as a stage for impromptu performances, a bustling café and seats made of old electric guitars – proving the principle of re-use runs right through to the shop fit.

This colossal new vintage emporium off Brick Lane is the joint project of a number of established second-hand dealers. Broadway Market's Dog and Wardrobe supply stylish furniture and homewares, while vintage fashion fanatics John and Jan fill two floors with on-trend clothing in excellent nick. Soon to come is a cafe, with premium espresso served from one half of a converted Fiat.
Rellik (the Trellick Tower is opposite) is often cited as a favourite among the Kates and Siennas of the celebrity world, but neither the shop nor its price tags are intimidating. It's big enough for a lingering browse and small enough to get advice should you need it.
The shop is run by three former Portobello market stallholders - Fiona Stuart, Claire Stansfield and Steven Philip - and their different tastes mean there's a good mix of pieces by the likes of Lanvin, Halston, Bill Gibb, Christian Dior and Ossie Clark. Philip's particular passion is the 1980s (Westwood, Alaïa) and he's popular with stylists (Kylie wore Rellik vintage in her Showgirl tour). There are earlier pieces too and one wall of the shop is dedicated to glam accessories, such as enormous Hermès sunglasses.
The Vintage Showroom is a retro haven for men, stocking basic items such as Pendleton shirts, Barbour jackets and vintage denim alongside more specialist items like heavy duty ex-soviet army surplus, and sailor's smocks. You won't find ironic T-shirts and jeans here - the focus is on quality rather than quantity.

Shoreditch and Mrs Jones have a thing going on; a riotous fashion showroom showcasing the celebrated costume designer's greatest hits, for sale alongside an incredible selection of unworn vintage specs. Cashmere by Jaggy Nettle and headdresses by Feathersmith complete the mix. At the back of the shop, the in-store 'Used Not Abused' sells a wide range of second hand LPs; next to that is The Drama Parlour, Mrs Jones' hair salon-cum makeover station. Open sporadically during the week and always at weekends.
